«We are and will be ready whenever we need to vote. It is Meloni who must tell us when he will take us to the vote, and given that the government has been unnecessarily long, the sooner the better for the country.” The secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein said this at the closing rally of the national Unity holiday in Reggio Emilia.
The progressive alliance and the Constitution
The alliance «can and must be broadened, but not narrowed. I believe that there is no better program for our progressive alliance than to implement our anti-fascist Constitution.”
“Security is the government’s responsibility”
«It will be up to us to build a safer Italy from every point of view» including climatic and environmental ones. «And I also want to remind this government that security and public order are a responsibility of the national government, they must stop passing it on to our mayors who are cutting off the few funds that were there for prevention, which is the only thing they can do. If crimes have increased, something has obviously gone wrong. They have made five security decrees, one worse than the other, putting measures that are worse even than the Rocco code, approved in 1930.”
«For us, security is a common good, a citizen’s right. We must address this with a progressive response. There is no need for metal detectors at the entrance to schools if psychologists are not brought in, without prevention, without building community.” And again: «If they want to do something serious they should bring the eight hundred million brought to Albania back to Italy and use it to hire a police force».
Ukraine and the role of Europe
“We have supported and will continue to support the people unjustly invaded in Ukraine by Putin’s military offensive which continues to move forward.” Then the dem secretary added: «We asked Europe to make a diplomatic and political effort, to take an initiative, to choose a European negotiator. I think that the EU must have a single, strong foreign policy that represents all 27, otherwise we risk not being able to accompany the only just peace which is not surrender to the aggressor’s reasons.”
