November 9, 1989 marked one of the most significant moments in contemporary history: the fall of the Berlin Wall, a barrier that for almost thirty years had divided Germany and Europe in two, separating destinies and ideals. That night, thousands of people united by the same desire for freedom tore down the symbol of the Cold War, beginning a new dawn for the continent.
“November 9, 1989, the day of the fall of the Berlin Wall, not only represents the demolition of a wall that for years had divided Germany in two under the grip of communism, profoundly impacting Europe and the entire world, but also tells of the moment in which thousands of people, united and linked by the same desire, had begun a new dawn and a new day with the reconquest of freedom, hope and democracy”, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote in X.
«To remember all this – he added – the Italian Republic has chosen to dedicate November 9th to Freedom Day, established with the Law of April 15th 2005, n. 61″.
On the anniversary day, the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola also wanted to remember the universal value of that historic turning point:
«From division to unity. From walls to freedom. From barriers to bridges. It was courage and determination that brought down the Berlin Wall 36 years ago. Today, that same spirit must guide us as we continue to build a Europe of peace.”
