In the first six months of 2025 the level of economic activity in Calabria increased moderately. Estimates based on the Bank of Italy’s quarterly indicator of the regional economy indicate an expansion of the gross domestic product (GDP) of 1.3% for the first half of the year, a figure higher than that of the country and the South. This was revealed by the Catanzaro branch of the Bank of Italy in its periodic report on the economic trend of the Calabrian economy.

The results of the Bank of Italy’s economic survey, conducted between September and October, highlight – the institute continues – a growth in the turnover of Calabrian companies in the first nine months of the year. Company profitability and liquidity remained at high levels. Business investment activity showed a favorable trend. After the stabilization recorded last year, the industry in the strict sense has shown signs of improvement. Construction activity – adds Bank of Italy – remained particularly high, still supported by the public works segment: investment spending by local authorities contributed, favored by the progress of interventions connected to the Pnrr. The activity has also grown in the tertiary sector: however, difficulties remain in trade.

The Bank of Italy then notes that in Calabria employment levels have increased at a higher rate than the national and Southern average. This trend – it should be noted – concerned both the employed component and self-employment. The unemployment rate decreased significantly, while the participation rate remained stable. Employment growth continued to support the incomes of Calabrian families, which also increased in real terms. The use of income support measures remained at high levels and above the national average. Consumption dynamics – the report continues – remained weak, affected by the low climate of confidence among families.
