The Court of Crotone has acquitted, because “the fact does not exist”, the former mayor of Isola Capo Rizzuto, Gianluca Bruno, of the charge of external complicity in a mafia association as part of a section of the Jonny investigation into the infiltration of the ‘ndrangheta into the Cara reception center for migrants in Isola Capo Rizzuto.

Sacco and Giordano were also acquitted of corruption charges

With the same motivation, the former governor of the Misericordia of Isola Capo Rizzuto Leonardo Sacco, already convicted in the appeal process resulting from the first investigation, and Carmelo Giordano, an official of the Prefecture of Crotone, were also acquitted.

Both were accused of corruption. The three, in May 2022, were the recipients of a notice of conclusion of investigations from the Catanzaro DDA.

The defense note: “Bruno is not a mafia member”

“The infamous accusation of being a competitor of the mafiosi and of having commercialized his public function – Bruno’s lawyers, Carlo Petitto and Luigi Villirilli, state in a note – was countered by the enormous work of study and research through the millions of pages of the preliminary investigation carried out by the defense team.

“He always acted in the interest of the community”

The study of the documents, carried out tirelessly, allowed the truth to emerge which was in conflict with the postulates of the district attorney’s office. In short, Gianluca Bruno is not a mafioso, he is not a friend of the mafiosi, he has not supported any gang. He did not dishonorably sell out his role. As mayor he always acted for his community, in the exclusive interest of his fellow citizens. A serious and respectable person, an honest politician who respected the laws of the state. This was and is Gianluca Bruno.”
