The regional councilors Enzo Bruno (Tridico President) and Elisabetta Maria Barbuto (5 Star Movement) yesterday filed a written question addressed to the president of the Regional Council of Calabria on the lack of judicial police officers at the Spisal of the ASP of Crotone, a void that risks compromising the effectiveness of supervision and control activities regarding health and safety in the workplace.

The lack of inspection personnel at Spisal

«The Prevention, Hygiene and Safety Service in the workplace has been established at the Provincial Health Authority of Crotone – recall Bruno and Barbuto – with supervisory, prevention and control functions, as well as judicial police functions in accordance with current legislation. Yet, according to the information in our possession, Spisal is currently without judicial police officers.”

A deficiency which, underline the two regional councilors, “would directly impact the effectiveness of public prevention and control action, resulting in a substantial reduction in the assessment and intervention activities required by law”.

The critical issue of land reclamation in the SIN of Crotone

The question also highlights how the situation takes on an even more critical importance in light of the territorial context. «The province of Crotone – say Bruno and Barbuto – is affected by environmental remediation interventions falling within the perimeter of the Site of National Interest, characterized by high technical complexity and significant health and environmental risk profiles. In this scenario, a continuous, qualified and fully operational surveillance system is essential.”

Reports of non-compliance on construction sites

Bruno and Barbuto also recall the reports relating to the start of the reclamation operations starting from 16 June 2025. «There would be presumed non-compliances in the carrying out of the works, both with regards to the operating methods on the construction sites and in the waste transport phases – they highlight – with a significant part of the materials destined for delivery outside the national borders, through the port of Gioia Tauro as the embarkation point».

Requests for intervention to the Regional Council

Hence the formal request to the Calabria Region to provide full clarity. «We ask to know whether the lack of judicial police officers at the Spisal in Crotone is confirmed, how long it has persisted and what the administrative or organizational causes are that led to it.

Above all – conclude Bruno and Barbuto – it is necessary to know which initiatives the Region intends to take, even on an extraordinary basis, to guarantee the full exercise of the functions of supervision, control and judicial police and which coordination and monitoring measures are envisaged to protect the health of workers, the population and the environment along the entire chain of reclamation activities in the Crotone area”.
