The Court of Appeal of Reggio Calabria has reformed the first degree sentence in the trial resulting from the “Dog Center” operation, named after a kennel in Sant’Ilario dello Jonio. All the accused were acquitted.
The decision arrived late on Tuesday evening, when the judges of the first criminal section – president Gianfranco Grillone, councilors Giuseppe Perri and Elvezia Antonella Cordasco – read the device that overturned the verdict of the Court of Locri, issued in May 2024. Among those acquitted include Leonzio Tedesco, owner of the “Dog Center Sas” kennel, for whom a fine of 3 thousand euros was imposed; Giuseppe Rocco Giugno and Mario Morroni, directors of areas C and A of the veterinary services of the ASP of Reggio Calabria; Santi Spataro, medical director of the kennel; and seven other defendants (Francesco Mediati, Beniamino Macrì, Giorgia Tedesco, Pasquale Scarfò and Sergio Marasco).
The Court held that, for some disputes, the fact is no longer foreseen by law as a crime, while for others it established that the fact does not exist or does not constitute a crime. In addition to the acquittals, the Court revoked all additional penalties and civil sentences, ordering the return of the seized assets to those entitled to them.
