The farmers’ roadblock at the entrance to Lamezia Terme airport has been removed. The demonstrators, who had occupied access to the airport with tractors since the early hours of the morning, cleared the roundabout, concluding today’s protest against high fuel prices. After the significant traffic disruptions, traffic is gradually returning to regularity in both directions along the Statale 280 dei Due Mari and the Statale 18 Tirrenica. According to what has been learned, the mobilization could resume on Monday in the Vibo Valentia area.
Expensive diesel and farmers’ demands
The Lamezia stop, near the central station and the airport, is part of the traveling demonstrations organized by farmers throughout Calabria. At the center of the protest are production costs: agricultural diesel has reached peaks of 1.70 euros per litre, while costs for fertilizers, fertilizers, electricity and transport have also increased.
Producers are denouncing unsustainable price increases and are calling for the elimination of excise duties on agricultural fuel and a ceiling on the price per litre. The demonstrators, inspired by the “Italy takes to the streets” movement and led by the Territory and Agriculture Movement, also call for the blocking of imports deemed unfair from non-European countries and rapid compensation for damage caused by wildlife.
The 15 million announced by the Region
In recent days the Calabria Region announced an extraordinary allocation of 15 million euros to mitigate the impact of fuel price increases. However, farmers are asking for guarantees that allow them not only to face the current difficulties, but also to plan work in the medium and long term.
