In traditional narration, Italy is always told at two speeds, with a compact, industrial and financially solid North, and a South perpetually in trouble, nailed to a structural delay that seemed eternal. A plot that has gone through decades of statistics and comments, settling like a petrified truth. Today, however, the numbers tell a different story. And among the regions that contribute more than others to overturning this pattern is Calabria.
The Banking Association’s data, relating to the third quarter of 2025, marks a paradigm shift that can no longer be dismissed as episodic. In terms of loans to families and businesses, the region recorded growth of 3.3%, second only to Valle d’Aosta and ahead not only of Friuli Venezia Giulia, but also of regions that for decades have represented the country’s production center of gravity.
