The community of Torregrotta remembers Sara Campanella, the twenty-two year old victim of feminicide, and does so through a gesture that can remain indelible as well as her memory. On the initiative of the municipal administration, and in particular of the councilor Dario Ilacqua, a green space on the seafront was dedicated to the girl. The ceremony was preceded by holy mass. “Today Sara becomes immortal – said Father Francesco Cucinotta – Today we echo the words of St. Augustine and we thank the Lord for having given her to us. She was a splendid girl, full of life, with dreams and plans, strongly altruistic who knew how to spend herself for others. Today we are here called to solve a problem that contaminates society because we realize that Sara is not the first nor the last victim. We must educate in new ways of love. Love doesn’t kill. We are called to bear witness to peace.” At the end of the celebration there was a moment of reflection, moderated by Giulia Carmen Fasolo. “We must strengthen the culture of good feelings and respect for life – highlighted the mayor Nino Caselli -. We must transform mourning into action”. The message from the family lawyer, Cettina La Torre, is powerful.

“Sara attributed an important value to women’s freedom. A principle for which she has always fought. Sara’s story forces us to consider the patterns of gender violence in a different way. Never underestimate the alarm bells. Sara’s story teaches us that violence can lurk even where there are no emotional relationships. This leads us to an even greater danger: it is therefore necessary to pay attention to the simple signs of discomfort. No one is exempt from what is the prevention and awareness-raising activity”. The most touching moment was shared by everyone in the words of Sara Campanella’s mother. Finally, the procession moved to the green space dedicated to the girl.
