The decision did not come unexpectedly because the municipal administration was well aware that the verdict could arrive at the end of the year and, in the last period, it pressed on the accelerator to achieve some results, from the approval of the budget to the start of the process for the “General urban plan”, when the electoral campaign for the spring administrative elections is already open.
Giardini Naxos thus begins the new year with the fallen mayor, given that on 31 December the Court of Appeal of Messina filed the sentence of the appeal presented on 8 January 2024 by Giorgio Stracuzzi, in office since October 2020, to request the annulment of the first instance order issued by the Court of Messina on 7 December 2023, with which his dismissal was declared after the appeal filed on 1 March 2022 by the then minority councilors Agatino Bosco and Francesco Palumbo.
The sentence is enforceable and by the end of the month the Region will decree the termination of the mayor and the council, with the appointment of an extraordinary commissioner: Giorgio Stracuzzi could appeal to the Supreme Court asking to suspend the sentence of the Court of Appeal, but it could take up to 5 or 6 months to have a response. At the moment he has not indicated what to do and the Administration will decide how to proceed at the beginning of next week.
