“I don’t think the President of the Republic is afraid of the ghetto classes.” Giorgia Meloni, guest of Five Minutes on Rai1, speaks on the topic of the distribution of foreign students in classes and on the interpretation given to the words of the head of state.
«I have read this prevailing interpretation – explained the Prime Minister – who read her words to contest the government’s initiative, but personally I don’t read it that way, because the President of the Republic says that schools must overcome ghettos, not create ghettos».
According to Meloni, the government’s choice to introduce “more balanced” classes should go precisely in this direction. The prime minister also specified that the 30% ceiling concerns foreign students “who do not speak our language”. Meloni also recalled the precedent of the circulars issued by Sergio Mattarella when he was Minister of Education.
«When the President of the Republic was Minister of Education he drew up circulars inviting us not to concentrate foreign children in the same class, it is a common sense measure. I think it’s right to continue it,” he said.
The deficit at 3.08%
On Porta a Porta, again on Rai1, the Prime Minister also spoke about the data on the public deficit, which stopped at 3.08%, underlining her regret at not having managed to get below the 3% threshold. «I’m sorry, we did a very complex job which led us to reduce the deficit from 8.1 to 3.08. So the classic: you scored 30, you were very close to 31. Staying under 3% would have allowed us to get out of the infringement early,” said Meloni. The prime minister also linked the data on the deficit to the revision of growth estimates. “I am also saddened because on the same day that Istat says that we are at 3.08 it also says that it is revising its growth estimates for 2024,” he declared. Meloni then observed that in previous years the growth estimates were subsequently revised upwards: “It has happened every year that after a year they have been revised upwards, I don’t know if Istat underestimates the Italians or the government and I’m sorry about this, I wouldn’t want it to happen even in three years’ time.”
The tax relief of contractual increases
Among the other topics addressed by the Prime Minister, there was also that of wages. Meloni claimed the measure adopted by the government on the tax exemption of contractual increases in the private sector, increased to 5%. «From the studies carried out by the Ministry of Labor, the measure affected over 4 million workers who received an increase thanks to this measure», he explained. The Prime Minister then announced her intention to confirm the measure in the next budget law: «It is a measure that I want to confirm. Little by little we are recovering with wages.”
