The trial of the doctors Antonio Micari and Giampiero Vizzari, working at the “G. Martino” Polyclinic, will open on December 12th. The two surgeons, who were assisted by the lawyers Antonino Amata and Francesco Ruvolo, were in fact committed yesterday morning by the preliminary hearing judge Monia De Francesco at the end of the preliminary hearing for the crime of manslaughter (this newspaper, by ethical custom, except in particular cases, for years now has published the names of the doctors involved in health matters only after the first actual procedural comparison prosecution-defense, which is the preliminary hearing, ed.).
The investigation, conducted at the time by the deputy Roberto Conte, concerns the death of 76-year-old Antonino Intelisano, which occurred in June 2022 after heart surgery for percutaneous closure of the left atrial appendage.
The patient’s family members, who were civil parties in the proceedings, were represented by the lawyers Ernesto Marcianò, Giuseppe Irrera and Alessandro Trovato. The Polyclinic was cited as civilly liable.
According to the reconstruction that emerged from the investigations and medical-legal advice, during the procedure a massive “gas microembolism” would have occurred, caused by air entering the bloodstream, which would have caused very serious brain damage.
