Finally first bulldozer strikes for the former Silos Granai. This morning, with a few days delay (due to the presence of homeless people inside), the work started. Closed for over forty years, they are ready to be deleted from the city’s page of shame. The former Granai Silos, which had represented an important element for the city’s economy, have become the largest landfill in Messina. Among the remains of that former grass depot there is everything. But just about everything. Waste, vegetation, asbestos, the remains of makeshift beds for men and animals, carcasses of cars and scooters, tons of plastic, bags full of all sorts of rubbish as well as the effects of the devastation (and fires) carried out by vandals in those abandoned spaces. An estimated 40,000 cubic meters of space over 3,000 square meters with a tower that exceeds twenty meters in height. All just a few tens of meters from the fast bus boarding point, from the terminal for cruise passengers arriving from all over the world and also from Viale San Martino. If you don’t enter that natural set of a horror film, you can’t believe it. You can’t believe it’s been left like this all this time.
