The Mayor Federico Basile, with union ordinance n. 43 of 18 February 2026, provided for the extension of the closure of the Gran Camposanto and the cemeteries of Santa Margherita and Giampilieri-Molino until midnight on Friday 20 February 2026.
The Councilor for Cemeteries Massimiliano Minutoli explains the reasons for the measure: “Following the checks carried out by Messinaservizi Bene Comune, a company that takes care of the greenery within the city cemeteries, it was ascertained that the safety conditions necessary to allow the reopening do not yet exist. The adverse weather event that affected the municipal territory caused widespread damage to the tree-lined areas. Work is being done on the creation of alternative routes within the Gran Camposanto to allow, where possible, even a partial reopening of the areas in which safety conditions have been restored. However, maintenance activities are still in progress and there can be no interference between the ongoing interventions and the presence of visitors in the construction site areas. For this reason, it was necessary to issue a new union provision”.
With reference to Villa Mazzini, however, it is limited until Tuesday 24 February. Date on which the company appointed by MSBC will carry out instrumental tests on the tree considered at risk.
