Yesterday morning the Carabinieri del Ros, on the orders of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of Reggio Calabria led by Giuseppe Borrelli, carried out seven arrests against AF, AG, BF, BS, CA, GD and SFA. The suspects are accused, in various capacities, of mafia association, extortion, threats and aggravated theft, as part of an investigation which reconstructs the structure and activities of the ‘ndrangheta of Siderno between Calabria, Canada and United States.
The provision particularly affects a branch of the Commisso family, the top of the ‘ndrina of the Mirto district, a subject considered close to the “Rumbo-Galea-Figliomeni” group.
The investigation is part of the long series of operations which over the years have documented the central role of Siderno’s ‘Ndrangheta in international criminal dynamics. Main objective: to identify the top components of the local Siderno group and its operational projections in North America, known as the Siderno Group of Crime with an active projection also in Albany, New York State.
The attention of the investigators was focused on some members of the Commisso gang active in the area while other historical leaders were detained. The investigative findings would confirm the family’s ability to maintain control of the territory and appoint top figures.
The investigation also documented the operation of the ‘ndrina of the Mirto district, a branch of the Siderno Locale made up – according to wiretaps – of around forty affiliates. The wiretaps made it possible to identify the alleged leaders of the ‘ndrina in the Mirto district and to reconstruct a particularly serious internal affair: the expulsion of an affiliate and the subsequent plan to assassinate him, which developed within the organization itself. A plan already at an advanced stage, then abandoned thanks to internal interventions within the gang.
One of the central figures of the investigation is a man originally from Calabria but resident for years in Albany, already involved in the “Siderno feud” of the 1990s. In the United States it would have assumed a role of reference for a component of the local ‘Ndrangheta, acting as a bridge between the Siderno parent company, the Canadian structures and those in New York. According to the investigators, he even planned a meeting with the super fugitive Matteo Messina Denaro, thus taking on a liaison role between the ‘Ndrangheta and Cosa Nostra.
Hearings to validate the arrests will be held in the next few days, which will clarify the position of the seven suspects and the developments of the investigation.
