Former Ivorian and international defender Sol Bamba has died at the age of 39. “Leeds United are devastated to learn of the death of their former captain Sol Bamba at the age of 39,” the English second division club said in a statement. “It is with the greatest sadness that we learned this evening of the passing of club legend Sol Bamba,” Welsh club Cardiff wrote on X. Trained in France at Paris Saint-Germain, he also played for Leicester (England), Trabzonspor (Turkey) and Palermo (Italy). Palermo also expressed their condolences on X for “his untimely passing.” The central defender made around 50 appearances for the Ivory Coast elephants, notably at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2012 African Cup of Nations. Sol Bamba had fought cancer and resumed playing in 2021, this year he was working with the Turkish team Adanaspor.
