On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the death of the Selected Carabiniere Pasquale Camardain the presence of the military authorities, as well as the Mayor of San Giorgio Morgeto and the Carabiniere’s family, the Carabinieri wanted to remember the fallen soldier with the deposition of a laurel wreath near the large area named after the fallen soldier in San Giorgio Morgeto ( RC) and with the celebration of the Holy Mass officiated by the Military Chaplain Don Aldo Ripepi.
Enlisted in the Carabinieri on 9 February 1948, Car. Sc. Pasquale Camarda, born in Oliveri (ME) on 21 December 1927from 6 May 1956 he served at the Carabinieri Station of San Giorgio Morgeto where he distinguished himself for his determination and great professionalism in carrying out the daily institute service.
On 3 January 1960, during a territorial control service, he intervened together with the interim Commander of the Station in a bar in that centre, having noticed the presence of three local criminals in the company of two foreigners. One of the latter, upon seeing the soldiers, threatened the non-commissioned officer by pointing a gun at his side. Consequently, Carabiniere Scelto Camarda reacted by engaging in a firefight and injured one of the two attackers, thus giving his superior the opportunity to escape the threat. However, during the shootout he was fatally shot.
For the very high sense of duty demonstrated, the President of the Republic awarded the “Silver Medal of Military Valor” to the memory of the Selected Carabiniere Pasquale Camarda.
The Carabiniere Scelto Camarda, already some time before the fatal event, had shown proof of courage and self-sacrifice, doing shield with her body to a little girl who accidentally found herself passing through an area where a firefight was underway between the Carabinieri and some criminals. An event, the latter, recalled by the protagonist during the ceremony and which was the subject of reflections by the students of the schools of San Giorgio Morgeto.
