The new cut in excise duties on fuel starts today and will last until May 10th. It is one of the innovations contained in the decree law published in the Official Journal which indicates a shorter period than the 21st May announced in the official press release after the launch of the measure. The text published in the Gazzetta confirms the extension for the 20 cent cut on the price of diesel and reduces the drop in excise duties for petrol to 5 cents, with an impact of around 6 cents if VAT is considered. The decree foresees a cost and coverage of 146.5 million euros for the intervention for the year 2026.

But government sources, according to whom coverage has already been found, explain: “It is a two-step operation that will allow the cut in fuel excise duties to be extended for three weeks. To the reduction expected until May 10th by the decree law published today in the Official Journal, is added what will be provided by a ministerial decree which will extend the tax reduction until May 22nd”.

Another 250 million resources would be added to the decree law, an intervention worth a total of 400 million.

The confirmation of the commitment to extend the excise duty cut is also contained, in black and white, in the technical report of the decree which accompanies the text in Parliament and which is not published in the Official Journal.

«The aforementioned measures – it is written in the technical report – will be applied in the period from 2 May 2026 to 10 May 2026 and extended, in light of the data currently available, for a further 12 days, with the procedure referred to in article 1, paragraph 290, of law 24 December 2007, n. 244″.

In practice, the extension will come with a ministerial decree from the competent departments and, according to what has been learned, it will be launched close to the expiry of the legislative decree. For these further 12 days, according to what we learn, resources of 196 million would be made available.
