The new forms of poverty and the strengthening of social policies were at the center of the extraordinary municipal council held today in Cosenza, convened to discuss the request for an increase in the regional fund intended for welfare interventions and support for the most vulnerable segments of the population.

Among the interventions of the session, particular importance was given to that of the regional councilor for Social Policies and Welfare, Pasqualina Straface, who highlighted the need to consolidate the institutional relationship between the Calabria Region, the Municipality of Cosenza and Social Territorial Area number 1.

During the meeting, the desire to strengthen collaboration between the different institutional levels was underlined through the activation of immediate financial flows and the commitment to identifying further resources to guarantee the continuity of services intended for social emergencies.

The meeting with the Regional Observatory on New Poverties

At the end of the city council meeting, a discussion took place between the regional councilor Pasqualina Straface, the director of the Regional Observatory on New Poverties, Antonio Belmonte, the deputy director Amato Napolillo, the general director of the Food Bank, Gianni Romeo, and some representatives of the third sector and of the associations involved in combating situations of social hardship.

The objective of the meeting was to identify tools and strategies capable of translating the available resources into concrete interventions, overcoming the bureaucratic obstacles that often slow down the implementation of support programs.

The reminder on the use of resources

In his speech, councilor Straface called on the Social Territorial Area to have greater responsibility in the management of funds intended to combat poverty.

According to what was highlighted by the representative of the regional council, compared to a Poverty Fund equal to 13 million euros, the reference area of Cosenza would be stuck at a spending percentage of 10%, in a regional context which has over 120 thousand families in difficult conditions.

The day ended with the shared commitment to strengthen collaboration between institutions and social realities of the territory, in the belief that only through full synergy between public bodies and the third sector is it possible to guarantee effective responses to the growing needs of the most vulnerable people.
