The mayor of Catanzaro, Nicola Fiorita, has issued an immediately enforceable ordinance which limits the use of water for drinking purposes in the city perimeter included in the streets: Via Indipendenza, Via Carlo V, Corso G. Mazzini, Via Nuova – Bellavista, Porta Marina, Viale de Filippis, Via Barlaam da Seminara, including alleys and side streets and surrounding areas until the conditions of conformity are restored.
In particular, the water must not be used for food purposes, washing and preparing food, oral hygiene, washing dishes or kitchen utensils, washing healthcare equipment, washing children’s objects (baby bottles, baby food containers, etc.).
It can instead be used for cleaning the house and the functioning of sanitary systems, as well as for personal hygiene with the exclusion of oral hygiene and the purposes mentioned above.

The mayor’s measure was necessary following the note from the Prevention department of the ASP of 23 October 2024 which communicated the results of the analyzes carried out on water samples taken in via Fontana Vecchia which highlighted the non-compliance with the drinkability parameters .

In the same ordinance, the mayor ordered that the offices begin all the necessary investigations in order to identify the causes that led to the undrinkability of the water, and quickly adopt the corrective measures necessary to restore the quality of the water with the technical-scientific support from SIAN and subsequently communicate this to the Catanzaro Asp to carry out the further checks necessary for the declaration of drinkability of the water.

Furthermore, we read in the act, the company contracting for the maintenance of the municipal water network was instructed to carry out analyzes at the sampling points involved and to immediately suspend the supply of water from the fountains concerned.
