A “monstre” project of approximately 3.5 million euros for environmental recovery and the protection of the coast biodiversity near the mouth of the Elicona river, in ecological continuity with the ZPS “Laguna di Oliveri – Tindari”, was presented by the Municipality to the Regional Department of the Environment. It is aimed at the granting of the contributions provided for by the PR FESR Sicily 2021-2027.
Over the years, the area has undergone a progressive degradation, due to a plurality of factors: intensive agricultural use, proximity to the purification plant, the lack of an organic management plan for the management of the territory, the absence of adequate infrastructure for sustainable use and the lack of restoration of coastal habitats. The project was conceived by the councilor Francesco Gregorio (geologist), in collaboration with the departments of Geomorphology, Marine and Botanical Biology of the University of Messina and with the municipal technical office.
“It is a semi -abandoned area of 6 hectares that we want to enhance for the enormous naturalistic potential – explains Gregorio – it is not only a proposal for environmental intervention, but a replicable model of integrated and participatory management of the coastal natural heritage. Its implementation may have a positive tangible impact in terms of biodiversity, ecological quality, climatic resilience and sustainable local development “.
