“We always respect the sentences.” Thus Angelo Bonelli, AVS deputy and co-spokesperson for Green Europe, comments on the final acquittal of Matteo Salvini in the Open Arms trial, underlining how the verdict refutes the narrative of a politicized judiciary.
According to Bonelli, in light of the judges’ decision, «the right will no longer be able to claim that a “red” judiciary exists». A clear reference to the autonomy and independence of the judiciary, defined as “a fundamental guarantee of our democracy”.
Criticism of the government
The AVS parliamentarian points the finger at the attitude of the executive, accused of attacking magistrates when the sentences are not welcome. A behavior which, in his opinion, was also repeated in the Chamber, with critical interventions addressed to the judiciary by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
The political judgment on Salvini
While reiterating respect for the judicial outcome, Bonelli clarifies that the political judgment on Salvini remains unchanged. «Our political judgment on Matteo Salvini’s actions remains firm, which is and remains negative», he states.
According to the Green Europe co-spokesperson, the former Interior Minister “used migrants as a tool for propaganda and electoral consensus”, not for a real defense of the country’s borders.
