Convictions for eight defendants were ordered by the panel of the Court of Patti, president Monica Marino, judges La Spada and Corona, at the conclusion of the trial resulting from the “Majari” operation which in 2020 brought to light an active partnership between Patti and Santo Stefano di Camastra dedicated to scams and extortion towards subjects who were deceived by passing themselves off as magicians and fortune tellers with esoteric powers capable of freeing them from alleged negativity, evil eyes or imminent dangers. The highest sentence, six years and four months of imprisonment, was given to Elvira Parisi, a 65-year-old from Santo Stefano di Camastra, held responsible not only for the crime of association but also for two episodes of fraud and one of extortion against three people. Six other defendants were therefore sentenced for the criminal conspiracy, Gino Paterniti, 54 years old from Tortorici, to four years and a 1500 euro fine with one charge of fraud; Lidia Messina, 58 years old from Stefano, three years and eight months old, also responsible for extortion and fraud; Teresa Prinzi, 58 year old from Stefano, three years and six months plus a 1500 euro fine, also for an episode of fraud. For criminal association alone, Dorina Negru, 36 year old of Romanian origins, and 74 year old Gaetano Capra, 74 year old, were sentenced to three years in prison, while two years and six months were inflicted on Francesco Ranno, 37 year old, both resident in Santo Stefano di Camastra. Finally, Rosario Lombardo Facciale, a 37-year-old from Torrenova, was sentenced to two years and six months plus a 1000 euro fine for a single case of fraud. With the exception of the latter, all the defendants will have to repay the damages to the two civil parties, to be paid separately with immediately enforceable provision in one case of 100 thousand euros and in the other of 75 thousand euros. Acquittals because the fact does not exist were ordered in relation to further charges of fraud. The sentence must be filed within 90 days.
