«In the latest budget law the government cut 95 percent of the funds for hydrogeological instability intended for Calabria: what does President Occhiuto think? And again, in addition to the evidently insufficient 33 million disbursed by the executive, does the Calabria Region intend to intervene with its own funds to provide immediate compensation to businesses and families following the damage of Cyclone Harry? The deputy of the 5 Star Movement Anna Laura Orrico stated this in a note.

The absence of the Region in the Environment Commission

«Today – says Orrico – in the Environment Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, I would have liked to ask President Occhiuto this. In fact, he should have intervened for a hearing but unfortunately, unlike in Sicily and Sardinia, neither he nor any other regional political summit was present at the session with whom he could speak as these questions fall within the strict decision-making competence of the Council”.

Coastal erosion and controversy over the Strait Bridge

«Also with regard to coastal erosion – he continues – given that many tourist activities, I imagine the same ones that the president spoke about at the International Tourism Exchange, were located right where the fury of the cyclone hit, what stage is the investment in this sense? Probably, now, those 300 million euros of cohesion funds diverted to the Strait Bridge could have been useful.”

The call for concrete responses to climate change

«Caring for our territories – concludes Orrico – is an essential obligation, especially in light of the intensification of increasingly frequent extreme atmospheric phenomena due to climate change. Commitment is needed and concrete responses are needed beyond the good intentions expressed.”
