Messina marks a decisive point in its urban renewal journey. With the publication of the definitive ranking by the Sicilian Region relating to the 2021/2027 FSC (Development and Cohesion Fund) funds, the city has been awarded a total financing of 33.2 million euros.

The result is not only economic, but also prestigious: Messina was in fact positioned in first place in the overall ranking, demonstrating the technical solidity of the projects presented.

A four-point plan

The resources will be allocated to four integrated urban regeneration programmes. These will not be isolated interventions, but an organic plan aimed at changing the face of different city areas. The pillars of the project concern:

* Extraordinary road maintenance: for safer and more modern roads.
* Redevelopment of public spaces: returning squares and common areas to the enjoyment of citizens.
* Removal of architectural barriers: for a Messina that is finally inclusive and accessible to all.

From announcements to construction sites

Mayor Federico Basile was satisfied and claimed the seriousness of the administrative action:

“We announced this plan last May 2. Today those resources are a reality. It is not just an announcement, but a promise kept: planning and administrative credibility make the difference”.

The mayor then underlined how the success is the result of a precise strategy: submitting to the tender with ready-made executive projects, reducing the time between financing and the actual opening of the construction sites to a minimum.

The work “behind the scenes”

Behind the record in the ranking is the technical work of the municipal offices, to which Basile expressed public thanks. Consistency with the rigid requirements of the regional tender has allowed Messina to leapfrog other centers on the island, guaranteeing a flow of investments that promises to significantly improve the quality of daily life of the people of Messina.

With FSC funds secured, the challenge now shifts to the operational phase. The city is preparing to transform itself into a large construction site for a regeneration which, according to the numbers, has no recent precedent.
