The Varia di Palmi will return on 29 August 2027. The municipal administration has formalized the date of the next edition of the historic festival dedicated to the Madonna of the Holy Letter, explaining that the choice was made at the end of a check on the organisational, administrative and economic status of the event after the installation of the new council and the new municipal council.
In fact, the decision means that an edition of the Varia will not take place in 2026, with the Municipality now aiming to build a long-term path to guarantee stable programming and an event worthy of its international prestige.
A new program for the UNESCO heritage festival
The Varia, recognized as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage within the Network of Large Shoulder Machines, represents one of the most important religious and identity events in Calabria.
According to the municipal administration, the time that separates the city from the next edition will be used to strengthen the organization of the event, consolidate the collaboration with the Varia di Palmi Foundation, find new economic resources and plan a more effective promotion also in terms of tourism.
The objective is also to allow economic, tourist and commercial operators to plan their activities well in advance in view of the event.
The governance of the Varia Foundation has been renewed
The reorganization process also includes the renewal of the governance of the Varia di Palmi ETS Foundation. In fact, a union decree ordered the revocation of the members of the Board of Directors, a provision that the Municipality defines as functional to the construction of a new organizational structure consistent with the program of the new administration.
At the same time, the first discussions have already been started with the festive communities, associations, ‘mbuttaturi and UNESCO representatives. In the next few days the dialogue will also be extended to other city entities to share the path that will lead to the 2027 edition.
Calabria: «The Varia must be a great opportunity for Palmi»
Mayor Giovanni Calabria explained the reasons for the choice, underlining the desire to give the event a stable and long-term perspective.
«It is precisely towards them that we have an even greater duty: we cannot limit ourselves to announcing an event, but we must and want to create the conditions so that the Varia truly represents a great opportunity for Palmi.»
The mayor also reiterated his desire to strengthen the religious and community value of the festival, relaunching dialogue with the Church and with the entire city.
«La Varia belongs to the city of Palmi. It will have to be a ground of unity, a symbolic place where citizens rally around their community.”
The objective declared by the Administration is to arrive at 29 August 2027 with a city ready to welcome a Varia capable of enhancing its history, strengthening its identity and promoting Palmi at a national and international level.
