The White House also posted on social media the first photo taken from the far side of the Moon by the Artemis II mission: it shows the Earth setting behind the lunar horizon. The image was taken during the historic overflight of the last few hours, as was the other breathtaking image which shows the eclipse seen from the Orion shuttle, also published by NASA and the White House.
The image destined to become the symbol of the Artemis II mission (and already chosen by NASA for its social profiles) is the photo of the Earth setting behind the lunar horizon, the so-called “Earthset”, a similar but different view compared to the historic image of the Earth rising on the lunar horizon (“EarthrisE”) taken by the Apollo 8 mission.

«Humanity, on the other side. First photo from the far side of the Moon. Taken by Orion as the Earth dipped beyond the lunar horizon,” reads the White House post. The other image shows the Moon as seen by Orion as it eclipses the Sun. «Total eclipse, beyond the Earth. From lunar orbit, the Moon eclipses the Sun, revealing a spectacle that few in the history of humanity have ever been able to admire”, comments the White House.
