«I was struck by the age of the violent protesters. It talks about a scenario that has been underestimated for too long: that of the so-called second generations or of too easy integration and talks about how there is also a problem today that passes through our phones”: this was stated by the president of the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission, Chiara Colosimo, speaking at the Festival del Sud underway in Vibo Valentia. Precisely on the topic of cell phones and social media, Colosimo recalled the 2025 protocol between the Anti-Mafia Commission, “the only institution” to have done so, and TikTok, to counter the spread of videos, messages, hashtags and contents that glorify, support or proselytize bosses and the mafia.
«Social media», observed the president of the Anti-Mafia Commission, «have triggered a mechanism of emulation and diffusion of acts which is objectively causing damage to the younger generations. These guys for some viewing, some of the time, do absolutely crazy things. This is an educational and cultural problem that we must all question but which must call families to exercise greater control.” Rather than banning social media under a certain age, for Colosimo «perhaps what is missing is the presence of the family, the school, the institutions. Schools and institutions without families struggle.”
Denise’s death is a defeat but the State was there
According to the president of the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission, Chiara Colosimo, the suicide at the age of 35 of Denise Cosco, daughter of the Calabrian justice witness Lea Garofalo, «is a defeat for the State, because if a justice witness doesn’t make it we still have lost, but not because the State was missing since in Denise’s case the State did everything and more than it had to do. We lost because once again the ‘Ndrangheta killed a girl and continued to stalk her.”
«I was very involved in Denise Cosco’s story for two reasons», explained Colosimo, «the first reason is that when she fell in love, she had a child and therefore, following this, she asked, despite having left the protection programme, to change some things in her life and I, who was already on the Commission, followed this path remotely. The other is that I am the mother of a two-year-old child and I honestly believed that love for a child surpassed everything. However, in this case this child was not enough to give Denise the courage to move forward.”
