Francesco Cannizzaro leaves the Chamber of Deputies, resigning from his role in Rome. From today he will only be mayor of Reggio Calabria and metropolitan mayor of the entire Reggio area. A scenario, obviously, that was expected, considering the incompatibility between the positions.
The mayor of Reggio said he was emotional in his last speech in Rome
“I take the floor – he said in his last speech in Rome – with enormous difficulty – due to the strong emotion – to address a greeting to the Chamber, to Palazzo Montecitorio in all its components, which in these eight years has represented for me not only a place of work, of discussion, of growth, of service to the Republic and to the citizens who have elected me as their representative, but also a second home; second yes, because the first one you all know very well what it is for me: Reggio, Calabria. It is known to all, in fact, the path that I have decided to undertake in recent months, choosing to leave this place, making a heartfelt choice. And precisely because of this, I am not at all surprised by the speed with which, right here, within the walls of the Chamber, the name “Mayor” has replaced that of “Honourable”; and this, I must admit, even before I was elected mayor, which I wanted to highlight because it is proof of how much I care about my land and, of consequence, to the political and institutional role that I have decided to play, with infinite pride”.
Cannizaro ready to lead the city of Reggio
“The people of Reggio Calabria – he highlighted – have entrusted me with a new task, which is as extraordinary as it is demanding: to lead the City of Reggio Calabria and its entire metropolitan area. It is a choice that I have made, as you well know, putting before any other evaluation the visceral love, mixed with a profound sense of responsibility, that I have towards Reggio. And right there, at home, in the exercise of my new functions, I bring with me the experience gained in this Chamber, the value of dialogue between positions different, the network of relationships woven within these walls and, no less, the belief that good politics always knows how to put the interest of the common good at the centre”.
“I leave this Chamber – he concluded – with gratitude and with the pride of having served the Italian Republic by always giving my best. I will continue to do so as mayor, with the same spirit of service, with renewed passion, sense of State and humility. I entered here with the Reggina scarf around my neck, I leave with the amaranth tie enriched by the embroidery of the coat of arms of the Municipality that I now represent. Because, as I said in recent months when launching my candidacy for mayor from here: “Rome can wait, Reggio”.
