The University of Calabria consolidates its presence in the global academic landscape by climbing positions in the prestigious Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS). The ranking involves over 100 countries and evaluates the quality of scientific research of approximately 2,000 universities in 57 disciplines, grouped into five major academic fields: Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences.
In the 2025 edition of the ranking drawn up by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, Unical reaches the national top in some scientific areas and rises to a total of seven disciplines present in this prestigious ranking, with the entry of the areas of Artificial IntelligenceOf Telecommunication Engineering and of Mechanical Engineering.
RECORDS AND NEW ENTRANCES. The most significant achievement is placement in the discipline Water Resourceswhich brings the University into the top 100 worldwide for the first time and to the top in Italy, standing out in particular on the “Quality of excellent teaching staff” criterion with a score of 32, which is 10 points behind the second Italian university in the ranking; this criterion measures the international caliber of academic staff, evaluating awards of global importance, presence among highly cited researchers, top roles in the main scientific journals and positions of responsibility in global academic organizations.
An unprecedented result, the result of a solid interdisciplinary commitment which confirms the excellence of Unical’s research on environmental issues. To the success of Water ResourcesIn fact, researchers from DIMES, DINCi and DIAm contribute in a synergistic manner, the latter department being particularly characterized by a strong vocation for environmental and marine subjects.
The expansion and growth of the University of Calabria is also evident in the area Artificial Intelligencewhich was included in the GRAS ranking for the first time. In this new area, Unical enters directly into the top 200 universities worldwide and ranks third in Italy. They also make their debut in the GRAS ranking Mechanical EngineeringAnd Telecommunication Engineeringareas in which Unical immediately enters the 201-300 and 301-400 bands respectively. Confirmations on are then added to these new areas Chemical Engineering, Computer Science & EngineeringAnd Physics,areas in which Unicalconsolidates the good results obtained already last year. In particular, with Computer Science & EngineeringUnical is third in terms of overall score and first in terms of research impact among Italian universities.
Precisely in the research impact indicator, which – via the InCites database – compares the number of citations received by the University’s publications (from 2020 to 2024) with the world average of works of the same type, year and disciplinary sector, Unical shows transversal solidity: in all the disciplines included in the ranking it ranks in excellent positions at Italian level.
