Great was the sensitivity and love for nature on the part of tourists and residents intent on swimming in the Mortilletto area, in the Torretta hamlet, where a specimen of caretta caretta sea turtle weighing around 60 kilos was rescued thanks to the promptness of bathers, tourists and residents including the municipal councilor Salvatore Turco who immediately alerted the Port Authority and the WWF.
Despite attempts to direct it towards the sea, the turtle, having reached the shore too far, was unable to swim due to the presence of a bleeding wound on its leg which prevented it from setting out on its own. While waiting for help, the swimmers mobilized to provide her with first emergency care until the arrival of the volunteers from the WWF of Crotone, chaired by Paolo Asteriti, who were also involved in other beaches. Having arrived on the Torrettano coast aboard a van, the volunteers, led by Roberta Salerno, were “escorted” by the residents to the site of the discovery and helped with a beach towel to load the specimen safely.
Thanks to the precious chain of solidarity formed by tourists, residents and environmental operators, the turtle was transferred to the Isola Capo Rizzuto center where it will receive adequate veterinary care from specialized staff to guarantee its return to the open sea. The volunteer Roberta said that “the turtle will be able to recover even if it will take some time” and invited the rescue participants to meet on the same beach to experience together the moment in which he can return to the sea.
