Romania could be remembered as the place of the first hard blow to the sovereigns in Europe. The mayor of Bucharest, the Europeanist Nicusor Dan overturned the trend of the first round triumphing on George Simion, leader of Aur and leading exponent of the European ultra -decay. Dan’s victory seemed to be clear from the exit polls, who however had contested Simion. “I am the president,” said the sovereign candidate, making one night marked by chaos fear. The bare, however, were rapid and certified Dan’s victory, which with 95% of the counts obtained 54.3% of the preferences, against 45.6% Simion. The Romanian elections have been at the center of the currentity of the entire EU for months. Since the annulment, last December, of the first round of the presidential courts by the Constitutional Court. Then, to be the lead, it had been the pro-Russian Calin Georgescu but the high court had decided to cancel the electoral round by accusing interference by Moscow and not allowing the sovereign candidate even to present himself. Interference that the Bucharest government has returned to report during the ballot, noting “a viral fake news campaign on Telegram and other social media platforms”, designed “to influence the electoral process”. Yet the call to weapons arrived from Brussels and from different European capitals so that Bucharest does not come out of the EU’s alveo at the end worked. The result of the ballot comes a bit by surprise. In the first round Simion had obtained over 40% detaching all the other candidates and increasing the fears, in Brussels, of an additional member country governed by the sovereigns. According to Dan (with 20.9%) had arrived: civic candidate, liberal, finance expert, the mayor of Bucharest in two weeks evidently managed to catalyze the support of Romanian Europeanists of all color. The turnout, at the polls, not surprisingly, has increased by over two points compared to the first round. On the other hand, Simion had put in place a mini-tour in European capitals also attacking Emmanuel Macron for what he had called the “dictatorial trends” of the Elysée man. The leader of Aur, in Rome, had been welcomed not only by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni but also by his deputy Matteo Salvini. If Simion has hurried to contest Dan’s victory, in the opposite front – which in Romania gathered center -right, liberal and, with less vigor, center -left – initially had predicted prudence. Then came the time of the Filo-EU festival. “The country wants dialogue, not hatred,” was the hot comment of Dan according to local media. “Romania has returned,” the Romanian MEP of the PPE, Sigfried Muresan, has exulted. “They lost Giorgia Meloni and the extreme right,” Renaw, Sandro Gozi, attacked the MEP.
The elections in Romania have been part of the so -called European “Super Sunday”, which also saw Poland and Portugal go to the polls.
In Poland The pro -European candidate Rafal Trzaskowski won the first round of the presidential electionswhich will be decisive for the future of the current government, according to an exit poll. Trzaskowski, supported by 30.8% of the voters, will face the nationalist candidate Karol Nawrocki, admirer of Donald Trump, al Ballot of June 1st. According to the Ipsos Institute, Nawrocki received 29.1% of the votes. The vote is decisive for the future of the current pro-European government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, as well as for the law on abortion and the rights of sex minorities, in a delicate moment for Europe due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the rise of far-right parties and the tense relations with Washington.
Trzaskowski, mayor of Warsaw and politician near the EU, presented himself to these elections as the favorite. “This result shows how strong and determined we must be,” he told his supporters in a covered stadium in the historic city of Sandomierz, in Eastern Poland. The nationalist candidate thanked his voters, stating that his victory at the ballot on June 1 will prevent the current coalition from “monopolizing” all the power in Poland.
The turnout for the urns for the elections on Sunday was 66.8%. In addition to geopolitical issues, social issues have also played an important role in the debates in another country whose company is divided. From when Tusk’s government coalition rose to power in 2023, the main government initiatives were blocked by the vents of the conservative president Andrzej Duda.
Instead, the early elections in Portugal have rewarded the stability. With concluded bare, even if that of the votes from abroad is missing, The center -right coalition Democratic alliance is confirmed as winner. With 32.7% of the votes elect 89 of the 230 deputies of the Assembly of the Republic, the Monoch firebored Parliament of Lisbon. Follow, distanced from very close measure and with the same number of deputies (58), the socialist party at 23.4% and chega at 22.6%. A historical result for the Portuguese far right party, which continues to grow: He had elected 50 deputies a year ago and the second place remains open because the count will complete only in the next few days with the colleges abroad that elect four deputies. It improves the result of a year ago also liberal initiative, with 5.5% and 9 deputies, and the small progressive party Livre, founded by a former MEP of the left block, Rui Tavares, who with 4.2% elect 6 deputies (he had four). Débâcle for the other left parties: the CDU (coalition of communists and green) to 3% elect 3 deputies, while the left block touches the expulsion from Parliament by going down to 2% and electing a single representative. The Pan animalists also retain a seat and debuts in the National Parliament united for the people (JPP), a regionalist party of the Madeira archipelago. The abstention is 35.6%, a lower number than in recent years. The final balance is more than positive for the Portuguese rights, but does not solve the problem of governability. The prime minister, Luís Montenegro, promised this time, like a year ago, which he would not have ruled with the far right, but the winning coalition does not have an absolute majority and would not even get it through an alliance with the liberals. The socialist secretary Pedro Nuno Santos presented his resignation. In his speech of this night, the leader thanked the militants for the support, but recognized the defeat and “the hard and difficult times for the left and for the socialist party”. After saying that the Socialist Party should not support the new government, because “Montenegro is not suitable to govern even after these elections and has presented a program that goes against the principles and values of the PS”, the secretary has declared that it will ask for internal elections to the party and that he will not be a candidate for the secretariat. «The far right has grown and has become more aggressive and lying. We will have to fight it, “said Pedro Nuno Santos.
