An explosion that occurred this evening in an apartment building in Santa Teresa di Riva could have turned into a tragedy. The explosion occurred on the first floor of a building in the Sacra Famiglia district and the toll was that of a woman who was not seriously injured and an entire building was evacuated. According to initial hypotheses, the accommodation was saturated with gas due to a leak and suddenly the violent explosion occurred, which tore off doors, glass and the balcony railing. The woman who was inside was injured with burns on her legs and arms and together with her husband she was taken to safety by some volunteers, via the balcony using a ladder, and then transferred to the “Cannizzaro” hospital in Catania. Once the alarm was raised, the Fire Brigade from Letojanni, Antillo and Messina, the Carabinieri of the local station and the Radiomobile Unit of the Taormina Company, the local police and three ambulances from 118 arrived on the scene. Other elderly residents of the building were taken to safety by volunteers and firefighters.
