An extraordinary control operation on the territory ended with thearrest of a 69 year old man, surprised in Sant’Agata del Bianco by the Carabinieri in possession of a hunting rifle with abraded serial number and almost 70 illegally held cartridges. The intervention, conducted by the soldiers of the Bianco Company together with the “Cacciatori Calabria” helicopter-borne squadron, is part of the plan to combat the phenomenon of clandestine weapons, a plague that continues to cause social alarm.
The man was stopped in an isolated rural area where the police, suspicious of his nervous behaviour, immediately checked the weapon he had with him, discovering that the registration number had been cancelled. During the check, the man handed over other cartridges that he had hidden in a PVC pipe near the check site, in an attempt to evade further checks.
The seized ammunition and weapon are now available to the judicial authorities for the investigation of the case, while the 69-year-old was declared under arrest and will have to answer to the charge of illegal possession of an illegal weapon and ammunition.
The operation is part of the wider commitment of the Carabinieri against the spread of clandestine weapons, a reality that fuels organized crime and puts the safety of local communities at risk. The Armed Forces soldiers, thanks also to the support of specialized units such as the “Cacciatori Calabria” Heliborne Squadron, continue to carry out targeted checks to identify and seize illegal weapons. Through operations like these, the Carabinieri confirm themselves as a point of reference for guaranteeing legality and protection of citizens, especially in sensitive areas such as the mountainous ones of the Calabrian territory.
