The Public Prosecutor of Paola, led by the chief prosecutor Domenico Fiordalisi, ordered the emergency preventive seizure, with a simultaneous request for validation, of the municipal purification plant of the urban waste water of Verbicaro (CS), with exhaust in the San Pietro torrent, tributary of the AbateMarco river. “The provision – reads a press release from the Prosecutor – originates from an investigation activity that led to the registration in the register of suspects of the legal representative of the company that manages the system”. The hypothesized crimes reject the having omitted “consciously the treatment of the waste from the city sewage network, determining the unloading, not purified and containing solid bodies of faecal origin, first in the San Pietro torrent, then in the AbateMarco river and finally at sea and having,” with the same omissive conduct, caused a significant and measurable deterioration of the waters of the San Pietro, AbateMarco and the marine waters overlooking the mouth, in violation of the regulations to protect the environment.
The investigations, supported by technical inspections and specialist consultancy, have ascertained – the Public Prosecutor’s office – serious structural and management deficiencies of the plant announces, with anomalies such as to compromise the quality and efficiency of the purifying process. The results highlighted a framework of compromise and deterioration of the environmental matrix, with concrete risks to public health and the safety of bathers, especially in the summer. The emergency preventive seizure was necessary – writes the Prosecutor – to prevent the aggravation and continuation of the environmental damage, avoiding that the free availability of the plant by the suspect could constitute further danger “.
