A doctor on duty at the Vibo Valentia ASP is now hospitalized in intensive care in the large metropolitan hospital of Reggio Calabria. The accident occurred yesterday on the A2 motorway, between the Gallico and Campo Calabro junctions, in the province of Reggio Calabria.
Doctor Angela Mirto was in the car together with her ophthalmologist colleague Lidia Idone when she realized that the car in front of her had spun. Having gotten out of the vehicle in an attempt to help, the doctor was hit by another car. Rescued, Angela Mirto was taken by ambulance to the Gom in Reggio Calabria where she is hospitalized in the intensive care unit where doctors are working to reverse the serious head trauma suffered by the woman which is believed to be in danger of life.
The Order of Surgeons and Dentists of Reggio Calabria expresses «deep esteem and emotion for the heroic gesture of its colleague» which, according to the president Pasquale Veneziano, «represents the highest expression of the oath and values that inspire our profession. In a moment of danger, he did not hesitate to intervene to save a life, putting ethical duty before his own safety.”
For the director of the Anesthesia and Resuscitation department Sebastiano Macheda, «the doctor’s condition is stable. She is assisted by a multidisciplinary team that is constantly monitoring every parameter.”
