Shootings in Sharon, north of Tel Aviv, left one dead and several injured. Police told Channel 12 they “suspect this is terrorism.”
Police Chief Danny Levy at the site of the Tzur Yitzhak attack indicated that the terrorist Omar Yassin “has an almost non-existent criminal record, but we are continuing to investigate. There were no secret service alerts about him”. He added, “We will leave no stone unturned. As far as we are concerned, the incident is over, there was only one terrorist. But we continue to guard the area,” he added while speaking to reporters. The news, initially spread by the IDF, about a second attacker who escaped and was subsequently killed, appears to be incorrect and refers to the first and only terrorist.
Hamas: “Heroic attacks, the resistance will continue”
Hamas praises the armed attacks in central Israel as ‘heroic’ and says they are acts in response to ongoing “aggression against Gaza” and “continuing crimes” including “against our people in the West Bank and Jerusalem”. The organization adds that the “resistance” will continue.
The attack, described by the police to the media as an evolving terrorist action, began at a petrol station in Kokhav Ya’ir and then continued in the nearby town of Tzur Yitzhak and along another road in the area. The shootings occurred in three different locations in the area, near the West Bank security barrier. A man in his 30s was killed in the attack on Route 5533, near Tzur Natan. Five other people were injured by gunfire in different locations.
In the town of Tzur Yitzhak an alarm was issued due to the risk of terrorist infiltration, residents were asked to remain in their homes. Teams from the Israeli Security Agency and the Shin Bet were sent to the site of the Sharon attacks. An IDF spokesperson stated that “the forces have arrived in Salait and Zuk Yitzhak, where the terrorist has been neutralized. The forces are searching the area in search of other terrorists.”
Netanyahu: “He is following the developments of the deadly attack closely”
“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has held a situation assessment and is closely following developments related to the deadly armed attack that occurred in the area of the Separation Line (Green Line)” (between Israel and the West Bank). This was reported by the Prime Minister’s office.
The homemade Carlo machine gun used in the attack
The Israeli police have found a weapon used in this morning’s terrorist attack in Israel: it is a homemade machine gun called ‘Carlo’, also known as Carl Gustav, of the type already used by terrorists in other attacks, such as the one on 7 September 2025 in Jerusalem. ‘Carlo’ is a handcrafted machine gun widely used among the Palestinian armed factions. The design was inspired by and named after the Swedish Carl Gustaf m/45 and its Egyptian Port Said variant. The weapon was first identified in 2000: rudimentary but effective, with a simple barrel welded to a tubular metal stock, a basic grip and a spring-loaded firing mechanism. Its popularity has been determined by the lack of more conventional modern weapons and the prohibitive price on the parallel market, where an M16 or an Ak47 costs several thousand dollars compared to a few hundred for the submachine gun. Built in illegal workshops in the West Bank, it soon became the first choice for Palestinian and Arab-Israeli criminals involved in drug trafficking. Who then also exported it: some examples of the ‘Carlo’ were found in the arsenals of criminal groups around the world, from Croatia to Brazil, up to Ukraine and Australia. It took several years before the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal secret service, began to deal with it, particularly starting from 2016 when the weapon was regularly used in some attacks.
Tajani strongly condemns the attack in Israel
“I firmly condemn the Hamas terrorist attack which took place today in Israel, in the Sharon region. I express solidarity with the victims and their families, and closeness to Minister Sa’ar and the Israeli authorities. Terrorism is never justified: no political cause, no conflict, no claim can legitimize the massacre of innocent civilians. Dialogue is the only path to lasting peace”. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani wrote it on X.
