The South Tyrolean champion, number 1 in the world rankings and on the scoreboard, beats the Portuguese Nuno Borges, 48th in the ATP ranking, in three sets with a score of 7-6(4) 7-6(2) 6-4, gained in two hours and 32 minutes of play.

In the third round the Italian, reigning champion, will face the American Jenson Brooksby, world number 81, who in the second match of the tournament overcame the Peruvian Ignacio Buse, 34th in the ranking and 31st in the seeding, with a quick 6-2 6-2 6-3.
