Paul VI, Watergate, Yasser Arafat, Golda Meir, Muhammad Ali’, referendum on divorce, Piazza della Loggia… 1974 was a year full of events, emotions and acts that had a significant impact on subsequent times. Among these also the decree of the President of the Republic Giovanni Leone, which attributed the title of City to Soverato, down there in Ionian Calabria.
And fifty years later, Soverato’s pride, expressed by the participation of a large audience, filled the splendid municipal theater for a young, joyful and popular celebration. A simple and complete, touching and particular ceremony, strongly supported by the municipal administration to celebrate an important birthday in a dignified manner. The event was opened at the municipal theatre, presented by the journalist Pietro Meliain the presence of the current Mayor, Daniele Vaccaof the Undersecretary of State for the Interior Wanda Ferro, of the ambassador of Azerbaijan, Rashad Aslanovof the Public Prosecutor of Lamezia Terme, Salvatore Curcioof the Southern Inspector of the Salesians Gianpaolo Rome and the Southern Inspector of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians Ivana Milesi of numerous civil, religious and military authorities and the mayors of the district, all those who, in the space of ten decades, contributed to the growth of the City of Soverato were remembered.
An important event dedicated to all citizens and inhabitants of the area who have the “Pearl of the Ionian” as their point of reference.
A ceremony embellished with moments of authentic emotion combined with the firm belief that, for a city, fifty years of history represent the fullness of its youth.
The Soverato that has been, together with the current one and what will be: a development project that, without interruption, has been pursued by all those who have loved and continue to madly love the City. A particularly exciting moment was the one dedicated to the screening of the video created with the contribution of the mayors who over the last 50 years with their work have favored the growth and development of the city, among all Antonino Calabretta to whom, as announced by Mayor Vacca, the city waterfront. An intense day, full of meanings, yet another step towards the future represented by the clear sky and the blue sea which characterize, in summer and winter, a magical and captivating place, appreciated and known by all.
