An imposing waterspout formed this morning, shortly after 8.30, in the stretch of sea in front of the Pizzo coast (in the Vibo area), attracting the attention of numerous residents and tourists present along the coast and in the city centre.
The vortex was generated a short distance from the shore due to the unstable meteorological conditions affecting the Tyrrhenian area. The phenomenon originated with a strong rise of water spray on the sea surface, and then structured itself into the classic column of steam that connected the sea to the base of the storm clouds. The event, which lasted a few minutes, was immortalized in several videos then shared on social networks.
Despite the visual impact, the atmospheric phenomenon did not cause any consequences: the waterspout progressively lost intensity, remaining offshore, until it dissolved completely. There was no damage to beach infrastructure, boats or people.
Evolving weather
The air in Calabria and the Vibonese area has been cooler since yesterday evening. In the next few hours, especially during the night between Monday and Tuesday, a significant worsening of the weather is expected with heavy rain and thunderstorms expected on the Tyrrhenian coasts of the Vibonese and Reggino areas.
