«There is a moment, in the lives of many young people from Reggio, when the question becomes inevitable: stay or go? In recent years, more and more often, the answer is the second. Every year around 1,400 young people leave Reggio Calabria, while the birth rate continues to decrease, stopping at 6.5 per thousand, below an already very low national average.” Luciana Megali, president of Forum of family associations for the metropolitan citydevelops his reasoning from the numbers, which is then articulated through a series of proposals to the mayoral candidates.
According to Megali, “behind these numbers there are concrete stories: couples who postpone the birth of a child because they cannot afford the cost of rent, single parents in difficulty with nursery school fees, large families who pay taxes and municipal tariffs as if they had the same needs as a single person”. For this reason, the Forum of family associations «has developed – adds Megali – an organic proposal sent to the mayoral candidates in view of the next municipal elections: a package of 9 operational measures designed to recognize the value of the family in the budget policies of the Municipality».
