The program of extraordinary openings of the Historic Halls of the most beautiful stations in Italy promoted by the FS Italiane Foundation continues with ever greater interest.
After the openings last September, on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October it will once again be possible to visit the Waiting Room of Taormina – Giardini Station. The extraordinary openings in Sicily will therefore offer the opportunity to access one of the most elegant and prestigious spaces of twentieth-century Italian railway architecture.
Its history begins in December 1925, when the Ministry of Communications approved the definitive project for the construction of a new passenger building for the Taormina station, to replace the pre-existing one. The old building, inaugurated in 1866, was an extremely simple rectangular structure, certainly not up to the expectations of the numerous Central European tourists who arrived in Sicily in the footsteps of Goethe’s Journey to Italy or after having admired the almond trees in bloom and the smoking Etna in the drawings of Eugène Viollet le Duc or Gustav Klimt.
The new station recalls the poetics of Arab-Norman architecture and also takes up some details, both medieval and neo-Gothic, of the most important city buildings, alternating the large windows and the sumptuous chandeliers with the Liberty style wrought iron of the finishings.
A style that finds its maximum expression in the first class waiting room, with decorations that recall the Corvaja and Duchi di Santo Stefano palaces of Taormina and with the original furnishings of the period in nineteenth-century dark wood.
To participate in the visits to the Taormina – Giardini station hall, advance booking is required on the website www.vivaticket.it starting from 15 days before the chosen date, until all available places are available.
Children up to 3 years old can enter for free, accompanied by a parent. For information and access methods for people with disabilities you can write to (email protected) The complete calendar of openings and updates are available on the official channels of the FS Italiane Foundation.
