There are also Catanzaro, Crotone, Vibo Valentia and Reggio Calabria among the Italian cities in which the balance between citizens who choose to move to the hinterland and foreigners who settle in the capitals remains negative: international immigration does not compensate for internal departures.
97 thousand residents lost in three years
This is what emerges from today’s analysis of Il Sole 24 Orewhich certified, on the basis of Istat data, the increasingly accelerated “escape from the cities” by the “old inhabitants”: in Michela Fizio’s article it emerges that in the three-year period 2023-25, the 106 Italian capitals as a whole have “lost 97 thousand residents to the advantage of other municipalities in the province, in other words in favor of the urban belts and smaller centres”. In this period, 53 out of 106 cities had a negative internal balance.
The 15 cities where foreign countries do not overturn the balance
In 38 of the 53 cases abroad overturns the result, but 15 remain negative: these are Naples, Palermo, Catanzaro, Catania, Reggio Calabria, Brindisi, Nuoro, Trapani, Crotone, Carbonia, Caltanissetta, Enna, Taranto, Vibo Valentia and Benevento.
The data for Crotone and Reggio Calabria are among the worst when comparing the migratory balance to the number of residents per thousand inhabitants: -16.6 and -16.5 respectively.
