The great classic theater returns to Syracuse

The conflict of Elettra, the metamorphosis of Oedipus and the lisistrata revolution. The National Institute Foundation of the ancient drama celebrates season number 60 from 9 May to 6 July at the Greek Theater in Syracuse. “Everyone should go to Syracuse at least once in his life to feed their soul and repeat the contemporaneity of the myth” says the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, presenting the new season. Two tragedies of Sophocles, Elettra, directed by Roberto Andò, in the translation of Giorgio Iranò; Oedipus in Colono, directed by Robert Carsen in the translation of Francesco Morosi; A comedy by Aristophanes, Lisistrata directed by Serena Sinigaglia in the translation of Nicola Cadoni, and finally, a modern show of dance music and poetry, with the new original creation of Giuliano Peparini taken from the Iliad by Homer, with texts chosen and translated by Francesco Morosi. “Last season – says Minister Giuli – he exceeded each record with 170 thousand tickets sold for a collection of 5 million euros, thanks to which the budget is made for over 80 percent by his own revenues”. In six years the value of the productions “has gone from 3 to 8 million euros”.

Roberto Andò will open the season, to his debut (in 2018 he had directed Andrea Camilleri in conversation on Tiresia), with the Elettra of Sophocles (music by Giovanni Sollima). Elettra will be Sonia Bergamasco, Clitennestra Anna Bonaiuto, Oreste Roberto Latini. It is a co -production with the Teatro di Napoli, staged until June 6, and then go on tour in Pompeii on 10, 11 and 12 July. «Elettra is a heroine of pain – explains Andò -. Sophocles entrusts everything to the sphere of emotions: electra theorizes his suffering. It could be a character of today’s disobedience. Sophocles draws extreme solitude. Like a modern figure of depression, Elettra does nothing but exhibit one’s emotions ».
The manifesto of the season represents an unpublished work by the artist Giulio Paolini. “The Messinciana di Andò represents the palace with a space of desolation to represent Elettra’s solitude – explains the delegated councilor Marina Valensise -. A tragedy of revenge and solitude, and the conflict is internalized. Not external as it usually happens in tragedies. We have directors of great competence and also this year new translations ».

After the success of his Oedipus King in 2022, Robert Carsen, to direct Oedipus to Colono (the music of Cosmin Nicolae) returns. “It is a poetic work, elegiac, not guided by fear or anxiety -explains Carsen in connection with Berlin -. There is something very sacred: it is as if we witnessed the metamorphosis of a man who is freeing himself from political and social obligations, from needs and ambitions, to become one with the nature and what surrounds him “. Giuseppe Sartori returns to interpret Oedipus, while he begins at the Greek theater in the role of Antigone Photini Peluso, Massimo Nicolini will be Teseo. On stage from 10 May to 28 June. And next year Carson will always be in Syracuse to complete the trilogy with Antigone.
The theatrical season will be more inclusive, as the president of the ADA, the mayor Francesco Italia explained: «Thanks to the interventions for removing the architectural barriers, the theater will be more accessible. The foreign public will be able to follow the shows live in the simultaneous translation in English, French and Spanish; We will offer the translations of the texts into Jewish and Arabic. Through the use of viewers, those who need it will be able to follow the shows in the Italian signs language ».

On June 13 Serena Sinigaglia debuts who directs Lisistrata by Aristophanes, staged until June 27 with the new translation of Nicola Cadoni Music by Filippo del Corno. Back to Syracuse, Lella Costa. “Lisistrata – says Serena Sinigaglia – is based on a terribly serious and serious assumption, something that has always afflicted humanity: war. Lisistrata is a tragic heroine that proposes a revolution ». The show will go on tour in Pompeii, 19, 20 and 21 July and at the Roman theater in Verona, on 11 and 12 September.
From 4 to 6 July, in world preview, Giuliano Peparini returns with the Iliad, on texts chosen and translated by Francesco Morosi. Copardotto with the Archaeological Park of Syracuse, Eloro, Villa del Tellaro and Akrai, the show of music, dance and poetry, will see its debut in the role of the EDO of Vinicio Marchioni; Giuseppe Sartori will be Achille while Giulia Fiume will play Andromaca. “Iliad is the oldest text of European culture, but it is also the most contemporary -explains Giuliano Peparini in connection with Macao -. Iliad talks about us, our hopes and our tragedies. It is set in a maximum security prison. A closed space without escape routes. There is a parallel between Iliad and prison: endless conflict; the code of honor and revenge; the rigid hierarchies; destruction ». The show will involve over 80 artists including the students of the Academy of Art of the ancient drama and the Peparini Academy. The musical part is entrusted to Peppe Vessicchio.
