The head of the National Department of Civil Protection, Fabio Ciciliano, carried out an inspection in some degraded neighborhoods on the outskirts of Catanzaro. Ciciliano’s visit had been requested by the undersecretary of the Interior, Wanda Ferro, and by the prefect of Catanzaro, Castrese De Rosa. The inspection concerned, in particular, the Aranceto district and via Lucrezia della Valle. Ciciliano subsequently took part in a meeting in the Prefecture in which, together with the undersecretary Ferro and the prefect De Rosa, the president of the Region, Roberto Occhiuto, participated.

“It is necessary – said Ciciliano – to make an assessment, together with the president of the Region, the mayor, the prefect and the undersecretary of the Interior to understand what the margins of management of this situation can be on an ordinary basis and which, instead, are those to be managed on an extraordinary basis”. “It is necessary to understand and analyze precisely – added the head of Civil Protection – the dimensions of the phenomenon, ascertain how many people live in these settlements and above all understand how many of these are illegal or regular. Without developing this reasoning it is impossible to adopt any initiative, regardless of the economic quantification, which is also important. These are all conditions and considerations that obviously need to be analyzed precisely, promptly and quickly.” According to the prefect De Rosa, «something can be done immediately for the degraded neighborhoods of Catanzaro. Aterp will try to find accommodation for the 15-20 families living in the housing structures built in via Lucrezia della Valle, which will have to be demolished and the entire area fenced off to avoid new occupations. We will also need to think in regulatory terms and on the possibility of extending an extraordinary intervention to this area too which will allow us to speed up all procedures. Today’s is an important first step that we will try to develop with concrete initiatives in the coming days.” “Differentiated solutions will be needed – said Undersecretary Ferro – for the different places that are in a state of degradation, also with reference to the financial resources that are necessary, and to carry out a census of the population. The common will is to implement teamwork between the State and local institutions.” “The intervention model to be implemented – said President Occhiuto – is the one we have already implemented for the Roma camp in Lamezia Terme, for which there will be results shortly. We have decided to intervene in the area of via Lucrezia della Valle, for which there will be the contribution of the Region and all the institutional subjects involved. We are also considering intervening on the other sites, especially on Viale Isonzo, which is however very complex.”
