The regional law of Campania which will allow Vincenzo De Luca a third mandate has been approved by the regional council. They voted 33 in favour, 16 against and one abstention.

The bill was approved with the favorable vote of the majority centre-left groups and councilor Valeria Ciarambino (mixed group), those against the centre-right, the 5 Star Movement, councilor Maria Muscarà (mixed group) and the abstention of the councilor Bruna Fiola (Pd).

The proposed law provides that “those who, at the end of the second mandate, have already held this position continuously for two consecutive mandates cannot be immediately re-elected to the office of President of the Regional Council – explained President Giuseppe Sommese – and provides that, for the purposes of the application of this provision, the calculation of the mandates starts from the one being carried out on the date of entry into force of this law.

With it, a national law is implemented and regional legislation is aligned with it, guaranteeing full legitimacy of the legal framework”.

From the Nazarene: De Luca will not be the Democratic Party’s candidate in any case

“We take note of the vote of the Campania Regional Council which in fact opens up the possibility of a third mandate for the current president of the Region. However, it must be clear that the vote expressed today does not shift the position of the national Democratic Party by a millimeter on the limit of two mandates for monocratic positions. Regardless of today’s vote, Vincenzo De Luca will not be the presidential candidate supported by the Democratic Party in the next regional elections”. Thus in a note Igor Taruffi, head of organization in the national secretariat of the Democratic Party.

Cirielli: I believe that the rule on mandates will be challenged

“I think it has no legal basis and I think the government will challenge the law.” This was announced by Deputy Foreign Minister Edmondo Cirielli (FdI) when asked in Transatlantico about the green light for the regional law which allows Vincenzo De Luca a third mandate. Cirielli is among the names circulating for a centre-right candidacy in Campania.
