The inferno is repeated after two years at the “Poly2Oil” waste sorting center in Ponte Vecchio, in the Palmi area: for about an hour, in fact, for reasons that will be the subject of subsequent investigations, the flames have enveloped the mountain of waste, mainly composed of plastic and paper, stored inside the over two thousand square meters of the factory. A dense blanket of black smoke visible from kilometers away inevitably dominated the Gioia Tauro plain, causing anxiety and concern among the resident population, due to the potential related health risks and possible damage to agricultural crops in the area.
In the vicinity of the fire at this moment a rain of debris is literally flooding the adjacent land. Several vehicles from multiple fire brigade detachments are converging on the site and probably, in light of what happened two years ago, will have their work cut out for them trying to put out the flames in the next few hours. In the meantime, people are running for cover as best they can, with citizens forced to barricade themselves in their homes, locking doors and windows tightly. Numerous onlookers flocked to the site of the enormous fire, causing some disruption to the road system managed by the local police of Palmi.
It now remains to be understood whether this event, which can certainly be defined as calamitous, could have repercussions on the quality of the air and the healthiness of the environments, but the real question that everyone is asking is how it was possible for such an accident to repeat itself in a short space of time, despite all the precautions that the company had adopted in the aftermath of the huge fire in 2024.
