“I will decide carefully on the basis of a decisive priority which is that of the serenity of my family, how and whether to continue on the administrative and political path”. He speaks for the first time after the news episode that hit him, the President of the City Council Joseph Guida, victim of the arson attack on two family cars about a month ago. The young politician, after weeks of silence and reflection, relied on a letter to make his thoughts known.
“I took a few days to metabolize and to be a little more clear-headed, before entrusting you with some thanks and reflections. These are difficult days we are experiencing, probably the most complex that our family has known. The images of a few nights ago will remain indelible in our memory among the saddest and darkest memories because it can only be different when part of the sacrifices of a life goes up in smoke.” And again: “I don’t know and we don’t know the reasons that motivated those who carried out this gesture, my family and I have made respect and education towards others the first real reason for living. This is why all this mortifies us, tears away our soul and gives us no peace. We can’t find other words to describe what we feel but it is right to extend heartfelt thanks to those who continue to be close to us”.
There is also space for thanks. “In particular, I want to thank the world of institutions, of politics (especially my Party, the Democratic Party at all levels), of the Church, of associations which have shown me a wave of affection that I could never have imagined. A dutiful thanks to the police forces for their work and for the humanity shown. Even though we do not know the motivations that pushed those who carried out this gesture nor whether it can be referred to something in particular, we felt the closeness and the desire to react on the part of many parts of society because when If events like this happen, the institutions, first and foremost, should take to the streets to make the voice of legality resonate loudly.” If there is something good in this story it is the tribute of esteem and friendship that we have received and, for this, we will always be grateful.
