The production of hazelnuts in Sicily collapses and the most affected is the province of Messina with the Nebrodi area whose cultivation represents 70% of the Sicilian one. According to Francesco Calanna, president of the Sicilian farmers Federation to determine the crisis are the climatic excesses that compromise its production. The economic damage, for the province of Messina and especially for the Nebrodi, where the culture of the hazelnut reaches 90% of the province of Messina, would be at least 4 million turnover.
«In Sicily – says Calanna – the working days dedicated to the hazelnut chain are 51 per year per hectare. Considering that the hectares dedicated to this crop on our island are 11,000, of which 70% in the province of Messina, the days lost in our area are 392,000 ».
