The academic year of the health professions of the University of Calabria was inaugurated this morning in the church of San Domenico in Cosenza, which since this year also includes the physiotherapy course and completes the three -year nursing. In the presence of the rector Nicola Leone, students and teachers celebrated the start of a path that combines training, innovation and roots in the territory.
The ceremony moderated by Fabio Vincenzi took part, together with the rector of the Unical, the mayor Franz Caruso, the Bishop Giovanni Checchinato, the general manager of the Vitaliano De Salazar hospital, the president of the Order of Physiotherapists Giuseppe Celestino, the president of the Order of Nurses Fausto married and the director of the Department of Pharmacy, Health and Nutrition Sciences of Unical Vincenzo Pieces.
After welcome to the freshmen, the new didactic classrooms made inside the Monumental Complex of San Domenico were inaugurated: in addition to the 120 -seater classroom already active, the pole is enriched by two new classrooms of 184 seats each, a 95 -seater classroom and a 78 classroom, as well as spaces dedicated to workshops, study, catering and services. A modern and functional equipment that makes the Polo delle Polo of Unical Health Professions capable of hosting a student community in optimal conditions in continuous growth. Already this morning the students followed the first day of lessons in the new classrooms.
Professors Ivan Casaburi and Nicola Ramacciati presented the training course and organization of the degree course to the nursing matricane, while Professor Luigi Morrone illustrated the plan of studies and the objectives of the new course in physiotherapy. Thanks to the arrival of the new 180 nursing freshmen, who complete the three -year period, and with the activation of the degree course in physiotherapy, for the academic year 2025/2026 the Uniical members who study in San Domenico climb to 500.
In two years, when the two courses are fully operational, the students who will attend the historic center of Cosenza will go to about 800, helping to animate it and, in part, to inhabit it. In fact, a part of them will house the new university residences located in the Gargeri district, a few steps from the San Domenico complex, which will be inaugurated on Wednesday 8 October, at 10:30 am. To encourage the full enjoyment of university services (canteens, sports facilities, recreational and training activities) the connection with the Rende Campus is guaranteed by 27 daily bus trips, but the stable presence of hundreds of students in the historic center will contribute to transforming this part of the capital into a university citadel living 24 hours a day. “The health professions – said the Rector Leone – are among the most important and requests.
The shortage of these professional figures meant that graduates have very high employment rates, finding work immediately after obtaining the qualification. Forming nurses and physiotherapists in a qualified way means responding to an essential need for society, supporting health and promoting the occupation of young Calabrians. The location of the Polo delle Health Professions in the heart of Cosenza creates a direct link between universities, cities and welfare structures, offering students opportunities for training and professional growth. But it is not just a didactic pole: our students will contribute to the construction of a garrison of vitality in the old city, in a project that intertwines training, enhancement of the historical heritage and development of the city, creating a virtuous model of university integrated in the urban and social fabric of the territory “.
